Alders grow well on wet, swampy soils. This tree is therefore most suitable for a wet corner in the garden of maybe next to a natural pond. 'Imperialis' is a ornamental variety with deeply incised foliage and is at first sight not recognized as an alder. This variety also grows slower than the common alder.
